Item(s) of the Week: Apples and Honey

L’shana Tova! And welcome to our first ever “Item of the Week” post! This is where we bring you one food item every week and compare the price of that item at different supermarkets around the DC region.

Before we get started, a small caveat. Food prices can vary widely within the same town and greatly depend on the season. The prices will not include any potential deals going on in the supermarkets, but will include the price for card members, if the supermarket offers shoppers the option of a membership card. The list will also be very specific on how food price is being compared, be it by the pound, ounce or unit.

This week is Rosh Hashanah, or, for those who don’t know, the Jewish New Year (Year 5774). Traditionally, Jews celebrate Rosh Hashanah by dipping apple in honey, which symbolizes the wish that the New Year be a sweet one. So, to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, we’re going to talk about apples & honey! But, more specifically, apples and RAW honey. Why raw honey? Because it is amazeballs.

I’m not going to lie, the first time I had raw honey I thought it was super gross. It was way before I went paleo, when I was sick with a sore throat and Jillian made me buy some and eat it with a spoon because of its anti-bacterial property in the hopes it would: 1) smooth out any inflammation in my throat, and 2) kill off any lingering bacteria. The conversation went something like this:

Her: Here, eat this with a spoon.
Me: Ew, it’s all gross looking and waxy.
Her: Eat it!
Me: Urgh. Fine. But I protest!

I did eat it and then put the honey away and didn’t touch it again until months later, after I’d gone paleo. By then, my taste preference had changed and things that used to be great were now too sweet, and things that were bitter were now great. And so, one day in the middle of my carb flu, I opened up that jar of honey and… Well. Let’s not go there. I’ll just say that since that day I’ve been drinking my coffee black. (true facts)

And so, without further ado, I present to you (hey, look at that, it rhymes), our Item(s) of the Week:
